Abacus is a member of CfBT Schools Trust (CST), which is accountable to its parent CfBT Education Trust and the Department for Education for the school’s performance. The CST Board of Trustees formally delegates some of its governance responsibilities to a Local Governing Body under a scheme of delegation. The Local Governing Body meets each half term and plays a strategic role in running the school. Its main responsibilities are:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school;
- Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and each pupil in line with its vision and ethos; providing challenge and support;
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
The governing body acts collectively to make strategic decisions and convenes working groups as required to address different aspects of school life, eg. standards, curriculum, wellbeing, admissions, attendance, premises and finances. Some governors with relevant expertise have been given specific individual responsibilities. Our current governors are:
Jill Barnes - Chair and Safeguarding Governor
Jill is a local parent and one of the co-founders of Abacus. Formerly a solicitor, she is now a qualified languages teacher. She works closely with our head teacher and vice-chair to ensure governing body meetings are run efficiently and deal with the school’s development priorities. Jill also takes the lead on governance and outdoor learning.
Jonathan Kendall - Community Governor
Jonathan is a local parent and partner in an architectural practice. He is our lead governor for property-related matters.
Andy Young - Finance Governor
Andy is a local parent of 3 girls and joined the Abacus board of governors in 2016. He is an investor with a private equity fund and is the lead on finance matters for Abacus.
Caren Chang - Mandarin Governor & Pupil Premium Governor
Caren is a local parent and an investment research analyst at an asset manager. She is the lead Governor for the Mandarin language program and pupil premium issues.
Sally Young - Communications Governor
Sally is an Account Manager at a digital marketing agency and is a local parent of 3 children.
Harriet Nowell-Smith - Reception Link Governor
Harriet is a local parent and co-founder of Abacus. She is a senior lawyer in the Government Legal Department and leads on HR issues. She is also our Reception link governor.
Vina Shukla - Community Governor
Vina is a lawyer at the Financial Conduct authority, and also worked for several years as a government lawyer.
Hannah Lewis - Community Governor
Hannah is a local parent and Vice President in a major retail financial services organisation.
Mary Sheppard - SEND & Outdoor Learning Governor
